What is the Regional Transit Information Study (RTIS)?

The Regional Transit Information Study (RTIS) is a project led by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) in partnership with local transit providers and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The purpose of this study is to improve how public transportation information is shared and accessed across the 13-county Gulf Coast region, making it easier for riders to understand and use available services.

    Why is this study important?

Many residents in the region are unaware of the transportation options available to them. The RTIS seeks to reduce these information barriers by creating more accessible, consistent, and user-friendly ways for people to find, plan, and use transit—whether for work, medical appointments, education, or daily errands.

How does the RTIS relate to the Regional Public Transportation Coordination Plan (RPTCP)?

The RTIS builds on the findings of the 2027–2031 Regional Public Transportation Coordination Plan (RPTCP) by focusing on communication and data-sharing improvements among transportation providers. While the RPTCP identifies regional mobility needs and coordination strategies, the RTIS concentrates on how that information reaches the public through digital tools, outreach, and marketing.

Who is participating in this project?

H-GAC is leading the study in collaboration with TxDOT, regional transit agencies, counties, municipalities, human service organizations, and community partners. A Steering Committee and Stakeholder Committee—made up of transit providers, advocacy groups, and local organizations—are helping guide project priorities and review key deliverables.

What types of improvements are being explored?

The RTIS is exploring ways to enhance how transit information is shared, such as:

    • Regional trip planning tools
    • Real-time route and service updates
    • Integrated fare systems that simplify payments
    • Centralized 'one-stop' mobility information platforms
    • Improved communication channels for riders with disabilities, seniors, and non-English speakers

How can the public get involved?

Public participation is a key part of the RTIS. Community members are encouraged to:

    • Complete surveys and online questionnaires
    • Participate in focus groups and public workshops
    • Provide feedback on draft recommendations

All opportunities to participate will be shared on the RTIS EngagementHQ page and through H-GAC’s public engagement channels.

When will the study be completed?

The RTIS is scheduled for completion in May 2026. Interim findings, survey results, and engagement summaries will be shared publicly throughout the study.
