COULD PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION BENEFIT THE PEARLAND COMMUNITY?

Public transportation, at its core, strives to improve access to our essential needs. It provides people with mobility and access to employment, community resources, medical care, and recreational opportunities. Pearland is one of the fastest-growing suburban cities in Texas, and we are using this time to consider if public transit is needed.

This study and its resulting plan gave the community a chance to take a closer look at Pearland, its mobility needs, and how transit services could fit into that mix, including:

  • Review a technical analysis that takes a closer look at Pearland’s population and employment patterns.
  • Examine what kinds of public transportation may work in Pearland, as well as potential costs and funding sources.
  • Provide considerable input to inform the recommendations for public transportation for Pearland.

HGAC needs to push for greater planning through connecting the outer-ring suburbs back to City of Houston. Take a look at what Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail has done for cities like Garland, Rowlett, Plano, and Irving. Workers can ride the rail into work over driving or take the rail to the airport. Imagine parking at Cole's Flea Market and riding the rail up to Hobby or IAH. If we continue to be unimaginative with our aspirations then we shall find just how poor our environment can become.

As a parent of a blind child, I believe the Ride Hailing or transit transportation is needed not only for the blind, but other special needs population as well. Having the option to independently go shopping or to an appointment, etc., would be so beneficial to so many in need. As a sighted person, there is such a freedom being able to go where I want to, when I want to, And honestly that’s basically what I want my for my daughter. The freedom to make her own choices, live independently, and to be able to have options with Transportation.

As a totally blind citizen in Pearland, it would greatly benefit me to have access to ride hailing and micro transit transportation options that are available. These transportation options would also benefit other special needs populations as well. These options would allow us to be able to move freely and independently about our community to do shopping, meet friends for dinner, go to doctors appointments, etc. without having to depend on family and friends to drive us around their schedules.

The need for the rail system in Pearland and Hwy 288 would be a great asset to the area. When traveling to other cities and a person experiences the ease of movement around a metropolis, it is very calming and enjoyable.
The Ride Hailing program and commuter sharing would be a plus in the Pearland and surrounding areas, also!

As the president of the Bay Area Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Texas, who has members that live in Pearland, I am extremely interested and invested in seeing Pearland acquire better transportation options. In addition to my role as president I am also a blind person who is employed full-time. I feel that the the microtransit and ride hailing options would be the most beneficial options for blind people. I also recognize that there are other segments of the disability population who aren't able to drive and who could also positively benefit from having increased access to transportation. Blind people want to contribute to the local economy, by spending money at local businesses. There is more to transportation than just getting to doctor's appointments. Having access to transportation impacts all facets of daily life.

Absolutely every citizen should access to reliable transportation

I support in the order shown the options proposed for the city transit, Harris County Transit, Microtransit and Commuter Transit. Any of these options could help alleviate the traffic congestions we experience on SH 288.
