Project Overview
The Houston–Galveston region accounts for nearly 20% of traffic deaths in Texas. In an average year, 760 people are killed and 3,725 people experience life-altering injuries from traffic crashes within the region. Each day two people are killed, ten people are seriously injured, and countless years of life are lost. In response to these tragedies, the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H‑GAC) and local agencies have initiated the H-GAC Safety Action Plan (SAP) project. The H-GAC SAP project will update the Regional SAP and develop Local SAPs for 11 local jurisdictions. SAPs are comprehensive road safety plans focused on reducing fatal and serious injury crashes and improving safety for all road users. SAPs employ a data-driven approach to prioritize safety projects, programs, and policies with significant crash reduction outcomes. After SAPs are complete, local jurisdictions will be eligible for discretionary grant funding through USDOT’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program.
This website will serve as the landing page for the Regional SAP and Local SAPs throughout the planning process. Please click the links below for details of each SAP.
